 The Devil's Tramping Ground

The Devil’s Tramping Ground is one of the most infamous sites in Chatham County and one of the most haunted in North Carolina.

While many different local legends explain the otherworldly happenings which reportedly take place on the grounds–like the mysterious displacement of objects left on the site overnight–one of the most popular holds that the devil paces or "tramps" the grounds nightly as he conjures his evil plots, stunting any plant growth.

It's Nothing

Description:

Cotten talks about how young Chatham would go to the grounds

Transcript:

Mhm. It's nothing. There's a bunch of grass, bare ground. Oh, everybody when I was, everybody went to the Tramp, Devil's Tramping Ground. Even some of the classmate boys in our area, they would dare to go over there and camp out overnight. But there's nothing except, a little space of ground where nothing grows and weeds all around it.

The Flatwoods

Description:

Phillips recalls the tales kids would tell after spending a night at the Devil's Tramping Ground

Transcript:

"In 1977, you could drive a car all through the flatwoods and it comes out at the Devil's Tramping Ground. And it's an old dirt and, you know, the lumber trucks, so you had to hit it at the right time or you'd be stuck out there. But you could drive a car 5 miles all the way through it, but you better drive about 10 miles per hour. When I was a kid, and I was a little too young, these guys would go spend the night at the Devil's Tramping, and they claimed they woke the next morning, and been moved out of the path, or that their hair--they saw their hair was standing straight up, or the car wouldn't start."

The stories I've heard have been, you know, that the devil 'tramp' that little spot out and if you go there it's evil. They used to do a Halloween trail through there or something. I don't do stuff like that, life is scary enough.
